eBay – Spear Phishing
eBay spear phishing incident demonstrates the most common IT security weakness for Irish web users
The eBay hacking incident proves that the most common security weakness millions of internet users in Ireland face daily is the “spear phishing” type of attack.
Web users in Ireland and indeed globally, are using the same password for multiple web accounts and websites. The hackers have then collected this type of data that would allow them to create e.g illegitimate auction sites or to generally commit fraud. The information the hackers gathered will flood criminal sites on the Dark Web, where criminals can purchase the data to create fraudulent credit cards or a sophisticate spam campaign.
As cybersecurity experts we consider that this level of hacking that eBay experienced is on the rise and it is a reminder that all of us have a part to play in our online and data security. It is important that internet users use this attack as a lesson for us all to alter our passwords between different websites and accounts. This is one of the easiest, cheapest and most effective ways of ensuring that we are protected online from anything arising from the eBay incident, or other such attacks.
